I'd say that they saved _Europe for Christianity_ or vice versa. All those
monks/scribes were too busy erasing all those heretical Greek (which few
could read) and Latin mss. to worry about the Classical world. They needed
the vellum so they could make copies of the Scriptures, St. Augustine, and
assorted Church Fathers.
(Some of my best friends are Irish........)
