You're so right; I researched the Puritan Commonwealth right after I
posted that. Anyway, the thing is... the religion which rose to
prominence in mid 21st century America isn't so much a religion as it
is a theological concept gone way wrong. Though Christians of all
denominations, even Catholics and Orthodox, participate in government,
the culture and worldview of the state is very markedly Calvinist.
However, the secret religion of the state isn't traditional,
evangelical Christianity. It only has the veneer of such. In fact,
it's a religious cult based a lot on Gnosticism and the Illuminati.
(Which is surprising considering Freemansonry was outlawed in all
states, as is the Church of Latter-Day Saints.) The theology of this
cult is based on absolute predestination presented in a way that would
make Luther and Calvin cringe, combined with the highly racist
"Christian Identity" and Anglo-Israelist nationalism. America is the
Kingdom of God and Christ and they are one and the same.
Basically, as far as the people are concerned, they think they serve a
nation based on Reformation principles especially codified in the
beliefs of the Puritans and a revival of the same in the
Reconstructionist movement. But instead of being a small but
influential element of conservative Presbyterianism, it became
ecumenical.
Catholics and Jews are tolerated insofar as they honor America. Which
often demands that Catholics defy the Pope's leadership (in fact, an
American antipope begins to rise in Baltimore which in effect becomes
the "American Rome"), and Jews ignore their brethren in Russia, Israel
and elsewhere.
Actually, the tyrannical regime that would take hold is a sinister mix
of both leftist and rightist principles. The actual practices, which
includes Nazi-style programs of eugenics, racial separation and a
desire to establish a millennial New World Order, often are missed by
the general public, which has been deceived to think that it's all
democracy, and all God's will.
But thanks for clearing me up on this matter. (Maybe it was the Irish
in me that wanted to bash Cromwell...)
