There's actually a 50/50 chance whether I'll use _need to_ or _must_ for
present tense.
I use _needed to_ in past tense.

Yes, _must_ was historically past tense: (ME) _most_ <- (OE) _möste_.
Similar to German's _müssen_, which kept its tenses. :)
