The changes we use are: ' and either " or , for primary and secondary
stress respectively. People often use standard X-SAMPA for this too,
though, so a word with only " is probably talking about primary stress.
& for the ae-lig. u\ for u-dashed, i\ for i-dashed. The reason for & for
aelig and u\ for u-dashed is to avoid using { and } as characters
(because they're confusing and ugly), yet some people still insit on
saying that & and { are swapped. This makes very little sense in my
mind. When I have need to talk of the OE ligature, I use /*/, which
isn't taken by any character.
