Actually, that's how white is treated in graphical arts, not only in 
science :)) .

Never met any who was really black or really white as healthy skin colour :)) .

And if you look closely, most people don't have a uniform colour on their 
skin. Depending on the place, the amount of hair, etc..., the pigmentation 
can very widely in a single person (and I'm not even talking of seasonal 
colour changes :)) ).

I am rather perplexed myself, especially since I met Brasilian people who 
became very good friends of mine. In Brasil, they are both considered 
white. Here, only she is considered white, and he is considered "coloured" 
(it's true that they have a big difference of tan). That baffled him when 
he first came here :)) .

I promise Maggel will have twisted ways of looking at skin colours ;))) .

PS: A Happy New Year to everyone celebrating it on this day! :)) (and to 
everyone else too, although they may not care as much :)) )

PPS: I have to relate what happened just after midnight here :)) . We (my 
boyfriend, I, and another friend we had invited) were looking at the 
special clock put on Nederland 1 (the first Dutch public channel) with the 
champagne ready, so that we could celebrate the New Year exactly on time. 
It happened, and we moved to the window to check the fireworks that began 
to be shot from everywhere. A minute afterwards I turned towards the TV 
again, and what did I see? "Felicxan novan jaron"! (I use the x-convention 
here. On the screen it was correctly written with the c-circumflex) It was 
followed by "Bonne année", and then by probably the same wish, but in a 
language written with the Devanagari script :)) . Afterwards my friend 
changed the channel :)) . I was extremely surprised that the first thing I 
saw was the wish in Esperanto (I was surprised it was there on TV at all! :)) )
There's no point to the story. Just wanted to share the surprise to 
everyone else :)) .
