Sounds like the Daine. For them, a "black" person
has black hair and feathers. His skin could be
ivory-pale or cream or tan or brown (most Daine
are amongst the leftmost 3/4 of that range, as
truly brown skinned peoples live only in Libya,
in the Vandashanno). There are words to describe
various mottling patterns like lighter hair and
feathers on left or right; stripes or splotches
of differently coloured feathers; etc. They also
rank colours, so a man with mostly black hair,
but some swirls of gray and a white patch would
be a "black"; but if he had a number of brown and
tan feathers as well, "brown" would be his
secondary colour.

Very few Daine are truly a single solid colour.

It is, or rather was, for the Daine. Most are now
so mixed it's really hard to tell. Red people are
about the only ones who have kept themselves
"pure"; but that's because they have a Thing
about body hair and won't mate with anyone that
has it, since they find it repugnant. You find
more black people in the East and more Browns in
the Middle; Yellows, Grays, Whites, Greens and
Purples are more common in the West.
