It seems to be quite feasible to get back to late Latin times by this
method. I think linguist.org has an archive of the Indoeuropean list
--- check any month for its installment of Trask vs. the long-rangers,
which usually has a few nice Basque etymologies showing either Latin
or Romance derivation.
