Hmm, the Hokkien (Minnan) word is [tsu:n]. That sounds a bit closer.
The Malay word for small boat (skiff?) is /sampan/, which is awfully close
to /sampah/, "trash". Not that this has anything to do with "junk", of
course. ;-)
