I think this is true all over the Western Hemisphere.

There is a great anecdote of a drunken Yaqui pounding his chest
and chanting at a U.S. anthropologist "Soy indio...soy indio....";
whereupon the anthro began to beat *his* chest and chant
"Soy judeo....soy judeo....".  Eventually the incident broke up
without violence.
