Well, apparently "wended" is current, but if anyone is using "went"
as the p.t. of "wend", it would be hard to know it.

Yup. What makes this case interesting is that both were strong
in OE, then became irregular-weak in ME by adding the regular
weak ending "-ede", and are now moving back toward the strong
conjugation again.

I don't think anyone naturally says "thunk" except as a joke.
