True, in modern langs. it's variously a voiced or voiceless velar fricative,
in addition to a trill /r/, stop /g/, glottal fric. /h/,... sometimes /l/,
/y/ and likely others; Polynesian zero. But in the Proto Language, *R just
represents the correspondence. It was originally symbolized with l.c.
gamma, _probably_ a voiced velar fric., but that's equivalent to giving
phonetic reality to IE *bh (or was it *p', or....). A theoretical no-no, at
least to the Old School.
