Ironic but not at all surprising.  I'm no psychologist but I know enough about
human nature to see that almost always, when one person tries to cut another
one down with statements like these, they're doing so in the hope that it will
make them feel better about themselves; if they can convince you -- and thus
themselves (if that isn't ironic!) -- that your hobby is even more pathetic
than their own then it gives them an ego boost of sorts.  Your hate-mailer
evidently didn't think much of the hobby of stamp collecting, or of himself
for engaging in it.
