Quoting from my Turkish textbook (trans. from Russian):
<< #77. Consonant Harmony Law.
...Consonants assimilate according to their voicing, while followed by
a suffix with initial consonant. If the stem ends with a voiced
consonant, the suffix begins with a voiced one too; if the stem ends
with a voiceless consonant, the suffix begins with a voiceless one
too. Examples: predicative suffix in 3sn and 3pl, Loc. and Abl. cases
suffixes.
Bedri pilottur. -- Bedri is a pilot. (pilot+dIr)
Palto dolaptadIr. -- The coat is in the wardrobe. (dolap+da+dIr)
Mektepten geliyor. -- He is coming from the school. (mektep+dan)>>
You can also see that it's accompanied with palatal and labial harmony
of vowels. Turkish is odd...
