Yes, they aren't very great at all. If the graphic images are the wrong
font size, etc., they can stick out like sore thumbs. And if you want to
vertically align a character that hangs below the baseline... good luck,
long endless nights of pulling your hair out awaits.
That being said... if you typeset entire lines of text as a graphic image,
they can be great for including stuff that's otherwise a nightmare to
handle. This is what I've chosen to do on my conlang's website. Mixing
text and graphics don't work very well, in general.
