It will always be controversial, since the direct test cannot be applied.  :-)
But we have recovered some Neandertal mitochondrial DNA, and the latest
study shows it well outside the range of extant _H. sapiens_;
in particular, the N. DNA is equally distant from all modern groups.
If we were interfertile, Europeans would be expected to be closer to
N. than other human groups.  Reference: Nature 2000;404:490-493.
