except that we would have to shift the whole system because Christ was born (according to what I've read) sometime between 4 BC and 7BC. [snip]

BC is an abbreviation for "before Christ." AD is an abbreviation for "anno Domini" (Latin, "in the year of our Lord"). When this system was created, 1AD was believed to be the year in which Christ was born; however, additional evidence suggests that Christ could not have been born after 4BC and was probably not born before 7BC.
