Well, it's the first year before the start.  You don't get zeroes when
you count things, only when you measure things.  We could name years
for the number of years since the origin (start of January 1, 1CE
(which would become 0CE) but that would give us two years zero.  This
might be better in some ways, but I don't think it would be much more
intuitive.
