Some grammar books will refer to the -nak/-nek suffix as genitive/dative
or even just genitive, but i think it is rarely used as such. It is
mainly used as the indirect object marker (correct me if i'm wrong, mau)
as in:

adtam a viragakot a baratomnak
i gave the flowers to my friend

i don't think it's possible to merely use the dative without the posessive
(but i could be wrong)

thus:

maunak a macskaja
mau macskaja

but not:

maunak a macska
