The notion of 'official language' exists only on the state level
in the US, and most states have no official language of any kind.
But it's true that Spanish probably has more speakers than all the
rest of non-English languages combined. This is largely because
of those states where Spanish has been spoken natively for centuries
such as New Mexico, where it is one of the state's official languages.
(Incidentally, I never learnt it in school, but then I was odd in
taking German and Latin when 70% of my cohorts in Texas were taking
Spanish.)
