In New York City, registered domestic partnership is likewise available,
with some (not all) of the consequences of marriage. It's actually
available to pairs (potentially to larger groups) of any gender, and
depends only on actually occupying the same household. Some RDPs
are parent/child, siblings, or (platonic) roommates.
