I'll admit that I tend to use "take" for medicines as the default. But
I'm comfortable with substituting "drink" for liquids and "swallow" for
pills. I agree that usually injections don't use "take". But I have
heard a cousin who is diabetic be asked by his wife if he'd "taken his
insulin". But I'll agree with your idea about overrides of verbs.
Even as the promoter of drinking of medicine, I'll accept that that verb
is correct, but not most common for me in that usage.
