Ah! I found the source, an old linguistics text book. The language was
Malay. The rule is that "vowels and glides following a nasal consonant
and not seperated from it by a nonnasal consonant are nasalized" (direct
quote), so, for instance:
[me~w~a~h]
[ma~rah]
[na~E~?]
[m@~laraN]
