This reminds me of a tidbit I found out recently. Some language of Asian Russia
(dammit, can't remember which one) has something like 20 different sets
of numerals, depending on the kind of noun which is quantified. Fairly
transparently, this descends from a classifier system in which the
classifiers lost their independent word status and became mere suffixes
(usually just consonants or clusters) attached to the number.
