I am very new newcomer to this list (just a few weeks now), but I've been
conlanging for many many years. I never confessed my twisted obsession to
anyone, so I've never had to defend it. Nor do I feel I should have to
defend it. I do it because 1) It's fun and interesting, 2) my conglang
sounds reel purdy when I speeks it, 3) I have learned and continue to learn
a tremendous amount about my native language and human communication in
general, 4) Where I live it never stops raining, so I stay inside anyway,
5.) Stamp collecting drives me nuts, 6.) After a hard day of computer
programming I find that agonizing over yet another miniscule grammatical
detail is immensely relaxing.
As a rank amateur I'll certainly never make any meaningful contributions to
the science of linguistics, but at least my hobby is marginally better than
drinking beer and watching football.
Let me add that I'm finding the posts on this list to be extremely
interesting and thought provoking. I am honored to be able to "eavesdrop"
on such accomplished and dedicated conlangers as are present among the
members of this list.
