While we're on the subject of pronouncing foreign place names, how do you pronounce Kabul, the capital of Afganistan? When the Soviets invaded Afganistan in the 1980s, newscasters called it /kA'bul/, but after the United States occupied it after Sept. 11, newscasters now pronounce it the same as the English word "cobble." --Ph.
