question: existential qualifiers/quantifiers

    I have come across a passing reference to "semantically-rich existential
qualifiers/quantifiers" as being an alternative grammatical form to
"semantically-empty copulae."
    What exactly are these existential qualifiers/quantifiers and how do they
function differently from copulae?  Can interesting examples be cited,
pleeze? And, yep, I am aware of something similar in Mandarin, _you_ "exist(s)"...
in contrast to the copula _zhi_
