What a wonderful - and sadly accurate - image! My take on auxlangs these days is: learn from the past, hope for the future, but don't wait for Santa Claus to fill your stocking if you want to eat oranges all year! In other words, if you do your best right now to lend a hand to improving people's understanding of each other, in whatever seem to be the most effective ways, there's a chance you'll get to enjoy at least some of the benefits while you're still around ... Awell-designed auxlang has more chance of contributing to the cause of human understanding than a poorly-designed one; but an auxlang will never be a panacea.
