*nod* I've always thought of it as first tone :-)

It depends on how much the "ba" is stressed, I think. If it's stressed it's clearly first tone; otherwise it's almost like a toneless schwa sound [b@].

Hmm, I'd think "ba" here is in 3rd tone? (In fact, I almost think of it as a distinct word from _ba1_) T -- Caffeine underflow. Brain dumped.
