De gustibus (ain't what dey used to be), so to speak. I tend towards
Douglas' view. Even though LOTR is obviously a master-work, despite many
skippable pages....... Another book, with similarly skippable parts, and
not dissimilar themes, is "Amadis of Gaul", IIRC the only novel of chivalry
lauded by Don Quijote for its "realism", and available in English.
