Well, for Sanskrit, the signs commonly transcribed as c, ch, j, jh
are supposed to be stops - and when I learnt Nepali my teacher spent
a lot of time make sure I didn't pronounce them as affricates but as
centro-palatal stops. Daniels in The Worlds Writing Systems gives them
as affricates in all modern prakrits, however, and they're not difficult
to pronounce at all.
