Might it be the pitch? I had a tendency to hear the pitch accent as length.

[{] is probably what you have in "Anne". [A] is the sound in "thaw" (although I
think some people have it rounded, in which case it's [Q]), and many Americans
have it also in "dog" (the others have [O], I think).
