Well, yes; but the author was listed as Stanley Schmidt, who most
certainly does *not* sound like an old Italian. And actually, I was right:

It *was* the same Stanley Schmidt who edits _Analog_ (a science fiction
magazine), and would therefore have been a science fiction novelette
(published in _Analog_ in 1978). I'd love to see this novelette, though;
it probably is based on the Italian tale, but I'm curious as to what
Schmidt did with it sf-wise.
