I guess you've read this article already, but I mention
it anyway. It's called "Some Remarks on the Functionalist-
Formalist Controversy in Linguistics" by Frederick J.
Newmeyer. Printed in "Functionalism and Formalism in
Linguistics - Volume I - General Papers" at John
Benjamins Publishing Company, Amsterdam/Philadelphia.
I don't have a year on that.

Basically, it is an attempt to merge (hehe) functionalists
and generativists. It's pretty good - and short - IMHO.
