Welcome out from under your rock, Andreas. :)
A "blog" or "'blog", short for "weblog", is basically an online journal, or diary,
intended for public viewing (and possibly commenting). They've become
something of a web phenomenon over the past couple years. Wil Wheaton
has a popular general blog; shorter-term special-interest blogs
are also common. For instance, Ian McKellen kept a blog of the filming of the
Tolkein films, and one of the CNN reporters stationed in Iraq kept a blog
during the early days of the war, until AOL/Time-Warner shut it down.
There are a variety of software packages available to make blogging easy
(much simpler than usual web page editing tools, since blogs are content-driven
and all about the text rather than fancy formatting). The prototype was
called Blogger, but MoveableType is also very popular.
