Speaking of natlang colour term inventaries, I heard of a West African language
which supposedly had a colour term inventary consisting of white, black, red,
brown, which would certainly seem to violate the universals mentioned. The
"reason", apparently, was that these are the colours found on cows, and cows
apparently where the only objects whose colour had any cultural significance to
the speakers.
I undfortunately cannot remember where I read or heard this - have anyone else
heard of it? A linguistic urban legend or bizarre fact?
