In the movie, "Closely Watched Trains," a Russian soldier
and Czech boy became friends and tried to teach their
languages to each other. They had a book with pictures
of flags. The soldier pointed to the Russian flag and said
(in Russian), "Our flag is red." Then the boy pointed to
the Czechoslovak flag and said (in Czech), "No! Our flag
is beautiful!" The basis of that argument was that the
Russian word for "red" was the same as the Czech word
for "beautiful." So my guess is that, at some time in the
very distant past, red epitomized beauty to the Slavs.
