I've found that Illustrator's shaped
'calligraphic' virtual pens, guidelines and grid
snap does wonders in this respect! A shame I have
to borrow someone else's computer every time I
want to test this fact. Just imagine the process:
1. Doodle down on paper what characters should
look like.
2. Make appointment with friend.
3. Change mind over (1.) umpteen times while
awaiting apointment time/date.
4. Get to friend's place by public
transportation, all the time rethinking
(1.) in head.
5. Redo (1.) at friend's place.
6. Getting started at the actual Illustrator
work.
7. Having to go home long before (6.) is
finished.
8. Saving all the work done as SVG.
9. Zipping all the files and uploading them to
own webspace.
10. Getting home again by public transportation.
11. Repeat (3.), modulo (5.).
12. Downloading all the files from (9.) and
unzipping them.
13. Review the work done in Inkscape.
14. Importing all the characters into FontForge.
15. Struggle with spacing and kerning.
16. Waiting until next opportunity to go to
friend's place.
17. Start over at (1.)
Actually, one of the perks of AI is the fact that you
can just apply a different, broader pen and an ever so
slight x-axis scaling to get a decent bold version.
I have to try redoing the Kijeb stone script with
some 'randomness' in the pen some day...
