What Trebor cannot see, so that it needs explanation, is that in
many fonts the numeral one and the lower-case L look the same, so
therefore it is inconvenient to use the numeral one.
With the braces many people have problems remembering which brace
corresponds to which IPA character, and thus CXS avoids using the
braces as "letters". Also many people object to using punctuation
and delimiter characters as letters. I happen to belong to all
three groups à la fois.
