Interestin'... Brings to my mind that the late music creator * John Cage is more well-known - in certain countries, i.e. Italy - for his expertise on mushrooms and cuisine. And in some other places (ferinstance IIRC Germany), Cage is more recognized for his poetry and writing (esp'ly on Zen and art/creativity) than his music. Here in America, he is relegated to the "avant garde" post-WW2 music world (& is somewhat controversial still, some saying he was just a charlatan and a con-artist). In Japan - to some extent, Cage is known for all the "better" above-mentioned aspects, including - of course - his music. * I wouldn't call him a "composer" since composing is an act of deliberated technical expression via creativity (emotive &/or logical) involving the artist's Ego. Influenced by certain mystical/philosophical Hindu, Taoist and Zen ideas and concepts, Cage was after Egolessness in his "Chance" music: "Art is the imitation of Nature in her manner of operation." ~ John Cage quoting Sri Ananda Coomaraswamy quoting St. Thomas Aquinas just settin' things up to let things just happen... goin' with the Flow of things... seein'/hearin' just where-ever they go... ;) BTW I love all the evocative toy piano pieces he created a lot and I really like the odd gamelan-like-ness of his "prepared piano" pieces...
