I know it's done also in Dutch (but that's a Germanic language). It's also found
in French, mainly from speakers of more than 50 years old. Younger speakers like
me simply use "mille" (except for the famous date "1515" that every French
person, whatever their age, pronounces "quinze cent quinze" /kE~zsa~'kE~z/ :) ).
