I was reading Beekes this morning and had a similar thought. In my
someday conlang family, the protolanguage will have some unidentified
reconstructed phonemes (perhaps "coefficients sonantiques", gone to zero
and inferred from their effect on adjacent sounds) written with digits.
But not /1/ because it looks too much like /i I l/.
