Basically yes. On top of that, they can be have length distinctions, be
nasalized, creaky voiced and some other stuff.

Well, the most basic are place of articulation (labial, dental, etc) and
manner of articulation (fricative, stop, etc). On top of that you get voicing,
aspiration, ejectiveness and so on ad nauseum.
Do yourself a favour and nick a textbook or other introduction to phonology! I
used to have a link laying around to an online phonology course, but seems
to've lost it, unfortunately.
