If
$ tar xzvf filename.tar.gz
$ cd filename
$ vim INSTALL #if this doesn't contradict the following, then:
$ ./configure && make && sudo make install
isn't working properly, chances are you didn't install devel-packages.
Most binary distributions like Red Hat and SuSE I believe leave out some
necessary files if you're trying to compile stuff. The simplest way to
fix this should be to install as much development stuff as you possibly
can. My understanding is that user-friendly distributions try to make
compiling software gratuitously difficult. I don't know why.
