There are many reasons: for disambiguation (George Bush vs. George W.
Bush), for euphony (Walter H. Waggoner [a reporter] sounds less jingly
than Walter Waggoner), to honor a parent or grandparent, as in my case.
Legally, however, the full name is the first name + surname only.
John W[oldemar] Cowan.
