I should have said "19th century", which is fairly modern.

And about 25 Romance creoles, of which Haitian Creole French is the
largest (7.3 million speakers in all countries, at least 90% monolingual).
Lesser Antilles Creole French, which has several varieties, has over
1 million speakers, and the French-based creole spoken on Reunion (an
island in the Pacific) has nearly that many.
