Hmm, yes, that might work; you're right that the marks should precede, I
think. And one could leave mid tone (hyphen) unmarked. This thread has got
me thinking about digraphs, too, though a possible problem arises with the
di-/triphthongs (yw)V(yw1) (but not all occur in practice). (Remember "y" is
[j]!!) We might end up with odd-looking sequences of vowels-- well, back to
the drawing board.
