This is probably due to Sanskrit's prominence, as well as the fact

a large number of loanwords were passed back and forth between it and

That's true, I have an Indian acquaintance who takes German, and she
has always claimed that the two languages have similar words solely
because German, like every language, comes from Sanskrit...
I've tried to explain about Proto-Indo-European and all, but it's
like explaining something to a wall... :P
