We were taught to make a difference between palatal, dental and
retroflex sounds. The only problem was, I was studying Chinese
at the same time, and my Sanskrit teacher and my Modern Chinese
teacher had quite different ideas about those sounds. When I
started with articulatory phonetics the year after, it turned out
both were quite wrong.
