I don't know why Devanagari gets such a bad reputation...
It's essentially a very simple syllabic script, with a consonant sign and
a diacritic for a vowel. Yes, there are odd forms when two consonants
occur next to each other, but the common ones will be easily learned through
use.
I'm am, however, speaking from a Hindi perspective. What little Sanskrit
I've seen did seem to be a bit more complicated, mainly because of consonant
clusters that don't exist in Hindi. However, I was still able to decipher
the script without too much trouble. :)
