First of all, thanks for the input! Actually, I could call myself a composer
only because some people consider Frank Zappa a "twentieth century
composer". I'm more of a rock musician than anything.
In Tech it's |hek'lfon| (please disregard the doubling of vowels in my
previous post, and that final -on is a nasal o, just as French would have
it).
Also, I realized that another word could be used for oboe: |ål| (å =
a-ring), from Greek |aulos|, which was originally a double oboe that took so
much wind to play one had to wear straps on his cheeks to avoid injury.
(Whoops, all words in Tech begin with consonants technically, so it's |?ål|
in that case....)
Clarinets are still known by their inherited European names, since I don't
know the name for any ancient examples of single-reed instruments made of
wood. The Egyptians had one didn't they?
